The Rice

Introduction: Bangladesh is a land of rice, a land of song and a land of beauty. We are too much dependent on rice for living. It is our main food crop.

What it is: rice is a kind of food grains. It is obtained from a plant called paddy. It is a one-time breeding plant. It grows from two to there feet high. It feeds the millions of people of the world.

Where grown: rice grows well in hot and moist climate. Sufficient rainfall is required for the proper growth rich. Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, china, japan, Thailand are the main rich-producing countries of Asia.

Kinds of rice:there are four kinds of rice in our country. They are: aus, aman, boro and IRRI. Aus is sown is the month of baishakh and reaped in sravan or bhadra. Aman is sown is asar or sravan and reaped in agrahayan or poush. Boro is sown in winter and reaped in spring. IRRI is cultivated all the years found.

Method of cultivation: farmers plough and harrow their lands again and again and prepare them well for sowing seeds. Weeding and maturing and required for the proper growth of the plants.

Who obtained:paddy becomes ripe is four of five months. Then they are cut, tied into boundless, carried home and thrashed. Next they are boiled, dried and husked. This is how rice is obtained.

Utility: rice is our staple food. We get many kinds of food from rice. We make chira, muri, khai, cake, polau, biriani etc. from rice. Straw and husk are used as fuel. They are also used as fdder for the cattle.

Conclusion: we are not self-sufficient is rice production. We should, therefore, make all efforts to grow more and more in our country.

There are another kind of rice – called ‘IRRI’ grows well in Bangladesh. Rice is the main crop of Bangladesh. We eat rice. Chira, khai, cake etc. are made of rice and we eat those as food. Its straw is used as fuel and to make the huts of poor men. It is also used to making cloths paper and wine. As rice is our main food, so we should take proper care for its production.

They are mainly three – aush, aman and boro. Nowadays ‘irri’ is also grown. Of them ‘aman’ is the best. Paddy fields are first ploughed and harrowed. Seeds of aush and aman are sown at the end of chaitra and and baishakh. ‘aush’ plants become mature in ashar and ripens in chaitra. ‘irri’ grows all through the year. Rice grows well in hot and moist climate. It grows in Bangladesh, india, Myanmar, china, Indonesia, japan and u.s.a. paddies are cut when they become ripe. Then they are separated from the stlk and sunned. We use rice in a number of ways. We take rice twice daily. Flattened rice, fried rice is prepared from it. Cakes of different kinds are made from rice. When the sunned paddy is husked we get ‘atap’ rice. For boiled rice the paddy is first boiled and then sunned again and husked. A kind of sweet called ‘payes’ or ‘firni’ is made of ‘atap’ rice. It is very tasteful to eat. The stalk of the paddy is dried into straw. It is used we should try to grow more and more rice.
